Climate Adaptation, Water and Natural Resource Management

Restoring Climate, Water and Pastoral Systems

Resilience begins where water, land and livelihoods meet. For pastoral and agro-pastoral communities, a functioning water system, a recovering rangeland, a productive farm or a reliable fodder source can determine whether households withstand the next shock or slide deeper into vulnerability.

BORESHA-NABAD strengthens climate adaptation by investing in the systems that sustain production under changing conditions. The programme supports climate-smart agriculture, water and irrigation systems, rangeland restoration, natural resource governance and locally managed production models.

Through partnerships with government extension services, local authorities, cooperatives and private actors, BORESHA-NABAD facilitates the adoption of drought-resilient crops, improved fodder production, land rehabilitation and more reliable access to water. These investments are linked to climate-resilient income models, including beekeeping, crop-sharing and women-led tree nursery enterprises.

The focus is not on infrastructure alone. BORESHA-NABAD connects water, land, fodder, livestock, markets and local governance, so adaptation investments strengthen both livelihoods and peaceful resource management.

KEY INTERVENTIONS

· Strengthening community and private sector–led water systems, by improving access, reliability, and sustainability of water supply through rehabilitation, management support, and locally anchored service delivery models for domestic, livestock, and productive use.

· Enhancing climate-smart production systems, by promoting adaptive agricultural and pastoral practices that improve productivity under changing rainfall patterns, reduce risk exposure, and strengthen food and income security.

· Strengthening rangeland and ecosystem restoration systems, by supporting rehabilitation of degraded land, improving grazing management, and reinforcing community-led natural resource governance structures.

· Building integrated water–fodder–livestock systems, by linking water access, fodder production, and livestock productivity to reduce climate risk and strengthen pastoral resilience pathways.

· Strengthening inclusive natural resource governance systems, by supporting community-based institutions, local committees, and cross-border coordination mechanisms to improve equitable access, reduce competition, and manage shared resources more effectively.

· Supporting climate-resilient livelihood diversification systems, by enabling green and nature-based income opportunities such as tree nurseries, beekeeping, and small-scale production systems that reduce dependency on climate-sensitive income sources.

RESULTS SNAPSHOT

· Water service delivery systems strengthened, reaching 64,800 people through improved and more reliable irrigation-based water access supporting domestic, livestock, and productive uses

· Rangeland management systems reinforced, with 1,050 participants engaged in ecosystem restoration and grazing management activities that improve productivity and reduce resource pressure

· Natural resource governance systems strengthened, with 505 members of community-based institutions trained to improve planning, coordination, and sustainable resource management

· Climate-smart pastoral production systems enhanced, with 1,000 actors equipped with skills and practices that improve adaptation, productivity, and market-oriented livestock systems

· Women-led green enterprise systems expanded, with 350 women engaged in tree nursery value activities linked to environmental restoration and income generation opportunities

· Inclusive agricultural production systems strengthened, with 300 households participating in crop-sharing arrangements that improve land access, production stability, and livelihood diversification

· Community-based environmental action systems activated, engaging 9,000 children in tree planting initiatives that strengthen long-term environmental awareness and ecosystem recovery pathways
