1. What is the Peaceful and Resilient Borderlands Programme (PRBP)?
The PRBP is a regional initiative aimed at strengthening peace, resilience, and socio-economic development across border communities in Eastern Africa. It focuses on conflict prevention, resource management, and building community resilience through cross-border collaboration.
2. Which regions or clusters does the PRBP cover?

The programme operates within three IGAD border clusters:

  • Cluster I – Karamoja Cluster: Eastern Equatoria (South Sudan), South Omo (Ethiopia), and Turkana (Kenya).

  • Cluster II – Moyale-Moyale Cluster: Moyale region in Kenya and Ethiopia (Oromo and Somali Woredas).

  • Cluster III – Mandera Triangle Cluster: Gedo (Somalia), Mandera County (Kenya), and Doolow Ado (Ethiopia).

3. Who are the main implementing partners?

The programme is jointly implemented by IGAD and GIZ, co-financed by the European Union (EU) and BMZ (Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development). It also involves NGO consortia such as:

  • Dan Church Aid (DCA) – Karamoja Cluster

  • Danish Refugee Council (DRC) – Mandera Triangle Cluster

  • Life and Peace Institute (LPI) – Moyale-Moyale Cluster

4. What is the duration of the programme?
The PRBP runs for 36 months, from 1st February 2024 to 31st January 2027.
5. Who are the target stakeholders?
Stakeholders include IGAD institutions (ICPAC, ICPALD, CEWARN), national and regional authorities, NGOs, civil society organizations, the private sector, and communities within the three border clusters.
6. How does PRBP contribute to peacebuilding and resilience?
By integrating Humanitarian-Development-Peace (HDP) Nexus approaches, PRBP promotes inclusive development, enhances local governance, and supports sustainable livelihoods, fostering long-term stability and resilience.
7. What are the main objectives of the PRBP?
  • To reduce local conflicts in cross-border areas.

  • To strengthen community resilience and social cohesion.

  • To enhance coordination among IGAD, local authorities, and implementing partners.

  • To promote economic recovery and sustainable development.
