Transboundary Resource Management

Unlocking Economic Potential in Borderland Communities

Borderland communities across the IGAD region depend heavily on shared natural resources such as water, pasture, and grazing corridors. Competition over these resources, particularly during periods of drought and climate stress, often contributes to tensions and conflict.

This thematic area focuses on strengthening frameworks and institutional mechanisms for the sustainable management of transboundary natural resources while promoting cooperation and resilience among borderland communities.

Resource Management & Resilient Livelihoods

The economic recovery pillar focuses on shared natural resource management, recognizing that water, pasture, and grazing lands do not respect political boundaries. Through improved governance of these resources, promotion of livestock marketing and cross-border trade, and building climate-resilient livelihoods, the programme addresses the environmental and economic challenges that borderland communities face.

PRBP ensures that development initiatives are integrated into government planning systems for long-term sustainability, building on the rich cultural heritage and social networks that make these borderlands unique and economically vibrant parts of the Horn of Africa.
